[WARNING: explicit/graphic topic] a tragic, blood-curling video surfaced on Bangladeshi social media recently. It showed a boy of twelve being beaten to death. In latest updates, absconding killer has been arrested in Saudi Arabia and is currently being extradited. Here’s to demanding exemplary punishment.

The Death of Rajon
by Adnan R. Amin for AlalODulal.org
A thirteen year old boy has been beaten to death.
Samiul Alam Rajon had studied up to the fourth grade and used to sell vegetables to make a living. His father is a microbus driver by profession. He and unnamed accomplices were suspected of stealing a rickshaw van. The boy was beaten, poked, tortured for nearly half an hour, resulting in his death.

Awful. I hope that the video does the one good thing it could do – raise awareness in such a way that beatings of any sort will no longer be tolerated in Bangladesh. Sadly, I doubt it.
I doubt it too. At least we have an urban-centric awareness and condemnation of such wanton violence. Strong exemplary punishment – seemingly being conceived as we speak – will send a strong message about the legality of such violence. Hopefully, in some years or decades, social consensus will follow.
Many of our villages have also experienced the conveying and unifying power of imagery and the virtual world. Perhaps, more people will opt to expose such everyday crimes taking place in the nooks and corners of the country.
We can only hope. That – as you know – is how one survives in Bangladesh.
